Cities for CEDAW is a grassroots initiative aimed at advancing the rights of women and girls by encouraging U.S. cities and counties to adopt ordinances based on the principles of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The campaign was launched in 2013 at a session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women by the NGO Committee on the Status of Women, New York (NGO/CSW NY), in partnership with two founding organizations: the WOMEN'S INTERCULTURAL NETWORK ( WIN ) and the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women (DOSW). In 2015, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights joined the effort, enhancing capacity-building and offering educational resources to mobilize communities nationwide. WIN, as a founding partner, has played a key role in connecting local and global women’s advocacy by empowering women’s organizations and municipalities to implement CEDAW principles at the local level. Each Cities for CEDAW ordinance promotes: Gender analysis of city departments and policies An oversight body to ensure accountability and implementation Funding mechanisms to support local actions aligned with CEDAW The campaign's mission is to make the global local—embedding international human rights standards into city-level governance to ensure safety, equity, and opportunity for all women and girls.
