Climate EREL

The goal of CLIMATE EREL is the production of scientific know-how and innovative tools for research and provision of services in the fields of environment, climate and energy. Our activities focus on several topics that serve sustainable development purposes. These topics are pursued in the current and forthcoming EC Framework Programs for research. World-class basic and applied research and development, supported by cutting-edge computational, analytical, and measurement infrastructure and expertise, as well as the creation of novel experimental methodologies, comprise CLIMATE EREL's strategic approach to climate change. CLIMATE EREL, focusing on the concept of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is dedicated to conducting world-class research in complementary research fields, covering the parsimoniously key challenges identified in the EU Mission on Climate Adaptation. One of its goals is to study complex and interconnected infrastructures where even micro-disruptions in the functioning of the systems can lead to catastrophic domino effects. CLIMATE EREL has developed unparalleled expertise in providing climate services (CS) in Greece for infrastructure, various societal and economic sectors and disaster management through numerous RTD projects and participation in international fora. CLIMATE EREL seeks to generate knowledge that could serve as a viable pathway for making resilient infrastructures. CLIMATE EREL has documented expertise in impact assessment models and tools for infrastructure. Risks are evaluated in relation to potential changes in the frequency, severity, and magnitude of climate-hazardous events. CLIMATE EREL has partnered with multiple municipalities and regional authorities in Greece to co-create and co-implement climate-resilient interventions with a strong focus on citizen participation to increase their resilience to climatic pressures, reduce their exposure to disaster risk and engage in cost-effective adaptation actions.
