About CMS VATAVARAN

Building on over 20 years of experience, CMS VATAVARAN actively promotes environmental stewardship by facilitating stakeholder collaboration for sustainable solutions and climate action. We empower communities, influence policy, and utilize compelling narratives to enhance environmental literacy and create tangible change. While internationally recognized for its pioneering environment and wildlife film festival, CMS VATAVARAN is much more than a festival—it is a dynamic platform that integrates media, policy, research, and community engagement to advance ecological consciousness and sustainability practices. Launched in 2002 by the Centre for Media Studies (CMS), a Delhi-based multidisciplinary think tank, CMS VATAVARAN has curated over 3,000 films and conducted screenings and dialogues in more than 40 cities across India and abroad. The festival component—both competitive and traveling—serves as a powerful medium to showcase stories that reshape perceptions, spark public discourse, and inspire action on critical environmental issues. Beyond films, CMS VATAVARAN works at the intersection of advocacy, education, and participatory communication, engaging with a wide range of stakeholders—from local communities and students to scientists, civil society leaders, and policymakers. Through capacity-building workshops, youth fellowships, grassroots campaigns, and strategic collaborations with national and international institutions, the initiative has reached over half a million people and contributed meaningfully to policy thinking and behavioral change. Today, CMS VATAVARAN continues to evolve as a collaborative ecosystem that champions inclusive, informed, and action-oriented responses to the environmental challenges of our time.
