About Communication & Culture- Joint Graduate Program at Toronto Metropolitan University & York University

Communication and Culture (ComCult) is a joint graduate program between Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) and York Universities, connecting several faculties and facilities across both campuses. Drawing on a range of scholarship and professional. practices, the program brings together perspectives from the social sciences, humanities and fine arts, and communication-and media-related professions, and aims to encourage innovative thinking, research, and practice. ComCult offers MA and PhD programs with a curriculum structured around three areas of study: media and culture, politics and policy, and technology in practice. While there is some interdisciplinary overlap between and amongst these three streams, the structure of the program is meant to help students identify key research interests, make relevant selections of coursework, and identify key faculty supervisors. Since the program's inception, ComCult students have been instrumental in forming a graduate student culture that connects both campuses. They were among the first to develop a Graduate Student Association (GSA) at Toronto Metropolitan University, and have coordinated the Intersections graduate conference annually since 2001. The GSA represents all students registered in the program, and provides a forum to discuss issues and interests, and foster participation in the graduate community. By allowing students to access the faculty, resources and facilities of both Toronto Metropolitan University and York University campuses, ComCult provides a unique opportunity for innovative scholarship and research in the fields of communication and cultural studies
