The Challenge Complex projects requiring disparate technologies overseen by separate groups of people can quickly take on a life of their own without constant and consistent professional oversight. Many organisations and design teams are rife with the tribulation of trying to keep technologies consistent across the spectrum - ubiquitous interjections of technology reduce costs. Using one system to perform multiple tasks instead of multiple systems performing one task-per-use-case reduces complexity. The benefits of collaboration are obvious – shared licensing, more consistency allowing for a faster design and quicker mean-time-to-repair, nationwide pricing from fewer vendors and manufacturers will lower capital improvement and operational prices, and corporate policies impacting such elements as the HCAHPS scores and even ICRA policies can be met across the board. An Alternative Approach We believe that building Owners, Architects and Design Teams will benefit from an executive oversight program, akin to the conductor of the orchestra. This consultant; this conductor, would have significant depth in technology, design and construction. This role would not displace the Design / Build Team or Owner-side staff, but would supplement efforts by gaining control of the technology decision points, driving collaboration and gaining consensus. Inherently, this reduces costs from both the capital and operational perspectives as now, with this oversight, each technology is viewed as a piece of the larger puzzle and not as a stand-alone.
