Design and manufacture of sustainable materials for additive manufacturing technologies.
The fossil fuels and plastics industries are strongly connected, with almost all hydrocarbons used in the manufacture of plastics coming from fossil fuels. Aside from the unsustainability of this working relationship, many of these plastics are not recyclable.
Bio-based polymers for which some part is sourced from renewable raw materials are gaining ground. However, developing them and using them in similar ways to conventional plastics remains a challenge. DeMANS will develop biopolymers suited to additive manufacturing, with a focus on computer peripherals. The team plans to deliver a technology roadmap guiding Europe into a new era of bio-based products and applications. DeMANS facilitates these developments through the mobility of research and technical staff from across our network will share knowledge and expertise, predominantly through secondments and research visits.
DeMANS is a European Union funded Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action Research and Innovation Staff exchange project aht involves partners from Ireland, Finland, Gemany, New Zealand and Australia.
