“DESIGN WEEK KYOTO”– Unveiling factories and studios in the cultural capital; witness the birth of innovation “DESIGN WEEK KYOTO– OPEN YOUR SI‘GH’TE –” A great variety of: factories, workshops, ateliers, offices, stores and universities, where creation is born every day, will be open to the public. DESIGN WEEK KYOTO activates an interaction between local manufacturing and creative industries with international visitors. Since 2016, the events have aimed to offer an experience that fruit new “insights” triggering synergetic innovation in and out of Kyoto beyond industry, culture and country. DESIGN WEEK KYOTO Taking place for the third time, the theme and emphasis of this year’s event is on the “OPEN FACTORY”. During DESIGN WEEK KYOTO, approx. 50 factories (TBD) and sites within and around Kyoto City are planned to be opened enabling visitors to see how things are produced by craftspeople and artists as well as engaging conversations there. Most importantly, we believe that these experiences will encourage formations of new ideas and products through insights and connections during the event. OPEN FACTORY EVENTS “Open Factory” events have been gathering attention recently both domestically and internationally. For example, “Tsubame-Sanjo Factory Festival” held in Niigata prefecture, renowned for metal works, had 30,000 visitors from all over the world during the four days which the factories had been publicly opened. Inspired by DESIGN WEEK PORTLAND taken place in one of the most creative cities in United States, DESIGN WEEK KYOTO is determined to provide an open and innovative experience. In addition to the open factories, this year will be the first to organize tours and talk events.
