We are a statewide grassroots coalition of individuals and over 100 organizations representing unions with PERS members, racial and climate justice groups, youth leaders, and faith communities with the goal of calling the Oregon State Treasury to account for its funding of climate devastation rather than prudent investing in a sustainable future.
We are part of a national movement to stop the production and use of climate-killing fossil fuels by stopping the funding of the companies that produce them. One way to do that is to stop funding them through the investments of pension funds. We are a member of the Climate Safe Pensions Network and the Stop the Money Pipeline coalition.
How it works:
When you invest your money, you might buy stocks, bonds, or other assets that generate income for you. The Oregon State Treasury invests in the same way.
Most of the funds held by the Treasury are state employee retirement funds (PERS), invested for the long term to be available at the time of an employee’s retirement.
Divestment by the State of Oregon means ending new investment in the fossil fuel industry and phasing out existing fossil fuel investments over time. The money that is currently supporting the fossil fuel industry can be re-invested in a sustainable future for Oregonians.
