Early Childhood Development Project

Early childhood development (ECD) is critical for shaping a child's cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth. Timely identification and intervention for children with developmental challenges and disabilities (DD) are essential for maximising their potential and inclusion in society. This project aims to improve ECD services in Osun State, Nigeria, with a focus on: • Strengthening healthcare systems: Equipping frontline healthcare workers to identify and manage early developmental delays and disabilities. • Advocacy for ECD policy: Working with the advisory board to develop strategies for advocating for stronger ECD policies in Nigeria. • Integration of the Ibadan Simplified Developmental Screening Tool and MDAT Sign Tool: Exploring the feasibility of integrating the tools for early child development monitoring into routine immunisation cards. • Establishment of a Child Development Centre: We are excited to announce that this project aims to establish a dedicated Child Development Centre at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) to provide comprehensive care for children with developmental challenges. We will appreciate your input and suggestions for the successful kick-starting and smooth-running of the centre. Project Goals • Enhance the capacity of healthcare workers to identify and intervene in early childhood developmental delays and disabilities. • Advocate for the development and implementation of comprehensive national ECD policies in Nigeria. • Increase awareness of early childhood development among parents and caregivers. • Integrate the Ibadan tool into routine immunisation cards to empower families with early detection resources. • Establish a fully operational Child Development Centre at OAUTHC to provide essential services for children with developmental needs.
