History The Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS), Pilani is a premier institution declared as deemed to be university established under Section 3 of the UGC act. The institute started functioning with effect from 1st July 1964 with late Shri G.D. Birla as its Founder Chairman. Across its 4 campuses, BITS Pilani now admits approximately 3400 first-degree students, 800 higher-degree students, and 350 PhD scholars. In 2018, the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, identified BITS Pilani for the Institution of Eminence status. About the Department of Economics and Finance The Department of Economics and Finance, BITS Pilani Pilani campus was established in 1944 with a traditional Graduate and Post-graduate Economics programme. Subsequently, the traditional Graduate and Post-graduate Economics programme was replaced by a conventional MA (Hons) Economics program in 1964. Five-year integrated MA (Hons) degree program was introduced in 1973. The MA (Hons) Economics programme was changed to MSc (Hons) Economics in 1979. The dual degree program in MSc (Hons) Economics along with an Engineering degree came into existence in 1979. Faculty members carry out research in all areas of Economics and publish articles in journals of national and international repute. Placement The institute has an excellent record of placing students in companies of national and international repute. About 209 companies visited the institute during the year 2020-21 to interview the students who are about to graduate.
