We are tackling two of the world’s most chronic non-communicable diseases, gum disease and tooth decay, and sadly, they are mostly preventable. They impact quality of life and can be painful, invasive, and expensive to treat. Gum disease can lead to tooth loss if left untreated and may lead to social, mental, and physical disabilities. Gum disease is also linked to other chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, respiratory disorders, arthritis, and there is evidence to show adverse pregnancy outcomes for women. Oral diseases impact 3.5 billion people around the globe and cost global economies more than US $500 billion per annum. 80% of global adult indigenous populations have: • 3 times as much untreated tooth decay; • 2 times as much gum disease; and • experience complete tooth loss 5 times as often as non-indigenous adults.
