Faces Up is a registered non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Kampala, Uganda. The organization works with young people at the margins and youths from across Uganda, focusing on young people from vulnerable backgrounds or displaced families, on those who have experienced trauma or disability, and on children and young adults whose life prospects are at best uncertain.
Through its program of arts and crafts education, Faces Up seeks to habilitate young people, helping them to tackle their psychosocial challenges, and gain the personal and professional skills that make them far more likely to succeed in life.
The approach: 1) offer life-changing arts education to all young people at the margins across Uganda, and 2) invite people across the world to purchase artworks done by children and merchandise featuring their art prints to enable us to raise needed funds to pay for the school fees of youngsters.
Why the model works:
Participating in art has proven to benefit young children by improving:
• cognitive development
• self-awareness and self-expression
• social and perception skills
• academic outcomes
As such, art can act as a highly effective form of treating trauma, depression, phobias, addiction, and other societal issues.
