Our #NextGenOfFM, The Facilithon is a SkillsUSA Student Competition created to Connect Students, Educators and Industry toward careers in Facility Management. Our grass-roots team of volunteers has spread The Facilithon initialtive in the United States with active teams working in a handful of other countries to adapt the Facilithon model to their educational environs. Founded in October 2014 as a start-up by IFMA fellow Peggy McCarthy & entrepreneur James Zirbel, the FM Pipeline team asked a simple question. "Is anyone talking to the next generation of FM and if so, how can we replicate and scale a successful method it so it makes a BIG impact, beyond that of a bake-sale?" Today, that answer is a resounding yes, through The Facilithon program's SkillsUSA partnership. SkillsUSA is a Career Technical Student Organization that revolves around technical skills. At 435,000 members, its America's fastest-growing CTSO, advocated by Mike Rowe of Discovery networks. SkillsUSA is already a dominant voice in this space, developing technically-oriented students from unmotivated kids to focused and highly-skilled graduates who know where they're headed, the built environment. Created as a direct manner to share the facility management/property management/maintenance director career fields with the next generation, The Facilithon represents the well-head to the giant lake of students with incredible FM attributes, just waiting to become our #NextGenOfFM.
