About Fidel Association for the Integration of Ethiopian Israelis עמותת פידל

The arrival of the Ethiopian community in Israel is an important milestone in Israel's history but the journey towards true arrival - full integration into Israeli society, is an ongoing challenge. Fidel (meaning alpha-bet in Amharic) has been meeting this challenge since its inception in 1997. Fidel’s mission is to improve Israeli society by providing the Ethiopian Israeli community with the skills and confidence to succeed and contribute while fostering pride in the community’s unique identity. Fidel's vision is of a socially and economically integrated community, proud of its unique identity. To actualize this vision Fidel provides high-impact programs nation-wide for more thousands of Ethiopian-Israeli children, teens, and parents each year. GOALS & OBJECTIVES • Empower community members with tools for better social and economic integration • Strengthen the sense of personal and community identity among Ethiopian-Israelis • Support and promote the success of Ethiopian Israeli schoolchildren both during school hours and after school • Strengthen inter-generational communication and encourage parents to be involved in their children's education • Establish and encourage community leadership • Promote Ethiopian Jewish heritage and culture within Israeli society Main projects: Youth Centers - a home away from home for teens providing educational and social enrichment School & Social Mediators - work with parents, children and teachers as advocates in order to overcome obstacles. Leadership Programs - provide mentor-ship in partnership with leading Israeli high tech companies, encourage initiative, nurture leadership skills and offer volunteering opportunities. Parents Empowerment Groups - encourage greater involvement in children's education Fidel is led by Executive Director Michal (Tawkalech) Avera Samuel - a leader within the Ethiopian-Israeli community together with Chairman of the Board Amos Yadlin (Major General, res.).
