INTRODUCTION TO ‘fourrmula limited’

John is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and created ‘fourmula limited’ in 2018. He started his career in 1975 as an apprentice at Yorkshire Switchgear in his home town of Leeds. In the late 1980s, when Merlin Gerin acquired the company, he was appointed the Project Engineer to design what became the market leading Ringmaster 2 – Rotating Arc / SF6 Ring Main Unit. John worked on numerous SF6 Rotating Arc Circuit Breaker device projects and, in his later years, worked closely with the Merlin Gerin R&D team in Varce, Grenoble, France. In 1993 he joined Reyrolle where he designed their first successful Fused SF6 Ring Main Unit namely the Guardian. In 1996 he moved to Long and Crawford as Chief Engineer but soon was appointed New Product Development Manager of Alstom where he designed a patented air/vacuum switch in conjunction with VIL in Rugby. This joint development resulted in 2 new patents related to Ring Main Units. During this period, he worked with colleagues in Macon, France to perfect their SF6 Rotating Arc Circuit Breaker. John moved to Lucy in 2001 initially as the Chief Engineer tasked with turning the SF6 products from loss making to profitable. This resulted in the VRN2A and VRN6A SF6/Vacuum Ring Main Units which Lucy are still manufacturing today in quantities of around 25k/annum. As R&D Director at Lucy, John headed up other projects including MCR, AEGIS, AX OHL air break Switch and non-SF6 research projects until 2013 when he left and joined P&B Switchgear as Managing Director. He resigned from the MD position at P&B Switchgear in 2018. In August 2018 John formed his own consultancy business 'fourrmula limited'. The name represents the 4 major market leading Ring Main Units that John was instrumental in designing during his career – Ringmaster 2, Guardian, VRN2a, and VRN6a.
John has been on numerous electro-technical committees including BEAMA – Principal Products Technical and Management Committees, BSI – as member of PEL/017/01 High-voltage switchgear and control-gear Committee and CIGRE. He has also worked on IEC working groups.
