Communities in NS are facing significant challenges, requiring innovative solutions. Current innovation policies prioritize sustainable and inclusive transitions, but traditional governance models focus on R&D and high-tech clusters. However, addressing Grand Societal Challenges (GSCs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) necessitates bottom-up governance models, led by local and regional government "transitioners". FREIIA aims to equip the public sector with the skills and resources needed for effective transformative policies and resilience-building, focusing on GSCs/SDGs. Through a design thinking-based Governance Innovation Intervention Learning Model, FREIIA aims to develop practical and easily applicable governance frameworks for NS islands, which have shown potential for impactful innovations beneficial to the mainland.
