GAIN4CROPS

The GAIN4CROPS project, funded by the European Commission, addresses a critical constraint in plant metabolism that reduces the efficiency of CO₂ assimilation and, thus, biomass and agricultural productivity. Our multidisciplinary team uses plant breeding techniques to create new-to-nature metabolic pathways that assimilate more CO₂, keeping it available for plant growth and out of the atmosphere. Starting with bacteria, we are validating our methods in more complex model organisms towards sunflowers and similar crops. These new crops could be more resilient to climate change and require fewer resources, making agriculture more sustainable.
