We are designing cell-powered RFID-like chips that will be placed inside neurons in brains of freely moving animals to record their neural activity and send NIR signals with a unique identifying wavelength for each neuron – this design should be scalable to millions of neurons. The applications of communicating high-resolution information from large ensembles of neurons that encode memories and perceptions in brain are enormous and will be described more fully in future applications. However, our initial application will be learning and memory mechanisms in addiction research.
