The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine demonstrated a clear lack of knowledge about the complex relations between nations, peoples and the domestic politics and social developments in Central and Eastern Europe. Developments in this region often have direct political, economic and social consequences elsewhere in Europe and around the world.
It is the mission of the new Groningen Institute for Central and Eastern European Studies (GICEES) to facilitate knowledge about this complicated region by doing academic research, organising and hosting cultural events and facilitating business with the region. It replaces the Centre for Russian Studies and will in the future also subsume the activities of the Netherlands Russia-Centre.
The centre is located in the University Library of the University of Groningen. The University has a longstanding tradition of research in and education about Central and Eastern Europe. Researchers, students and other interested parties are invited to use our extensive collection of books and other materials here.
