DSEAR (ATEX/CAD in Europe) Regulations 2002 set out the requirements for minimising the risks and protecting workers from fire (& explosion) where flammable materials are handled which could create an explosive atmosphere.
Thermal fluids can become volatile and hazardous, resulting in an explosive atmosphere, if conditions are allowed to deteriorate. The risk increases when thermal fluid has degenerated and flash point, boiling points and auto ignition temperatures are reduced - the lower the flash point, the higher the risk. Taking regular hot, circulating samples, while the system is in operation, and analysing the results will tell us if there’s a risk.
