The Global Meteor Network (GMN) consists of more than 1000 video meteor cameras hosted by amateur astronomers and professionals in 45+ countries across the globe. The network operates as a decentralized science instrument.
The GMN’s primary mission is ensuring that no unique space events are missed, such as rare meteor shower outbursts which may endanger satellites and astronauts in space.
The network also observes fireballs which drop meteorites to the ground. Observing the trajectories of fireballs and recovering the fallen rocks is (almost) equivalent to asteroid sample return missions such as Hayabusa-2 and OSIRIS-REX.
