Why the UK needs this technology
The electrification of transport and heat in world economies will drive changes to supporting infrastructure far beyond anything we have seen since the closure of coal-fired power-station fleets, or the arrival of diesel trains to replace steam motive power.
With EV penetration at over 91% of the market, Norway already has direct experience of what this level of demand will do to the grid and has taken steps to mitigate power quality anomalies such as voltage imbalance and fast charger-induced voltage & current harmonics.
In the UK where our grid is weaker than Norway’s we are going to experience similar pressure as the move towards electrification of transport & heat accelerates and power networks start to feel the pressure under peak demands.
We are now seeing a range of power anomalies that trip electrical plant and machinery if they have not been correctly protected. These can be extremely expensive stops when a robotic line, chemical or manufacturing plant ceases operation and must be stripped down before re-starting. For a water treatment plant they can result in regulatory fines for the utility.

As an example, in the US power quality issues are tripping baggage carousels at airports right across the country causing delays in service operations and passenger through-put because baggage cannot be scanned.
