Together with other stakeholders, DE-CIX is supporting the ambitious Gaia-X initiative that aims at creating an efficient, secure, and trustworthy data and infrastructure ecosystem in Europe. Gaia-X’s mission is to strengthen digital sovereignty: Individuals, organizations and communities stay in complete control over stored and processed data and are enabled to take independent decisions on who is permitted to have access to it.
Since DE-CIX already lives the vision of an ecosystem, DE-CIX and Gaia-X fit together not only on the technical level, but also on the conceptual level. Therefore, an integration of DE-CIX into the Gaia-X system makes sense and is a blueprint for how other interconnection providers can integrate themselves into Gaia-X.

Summa has been Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the world's largest Internet Exchange (IX) DE-CIX in Frankfurt since 1996 and the founder and CEO of eco – Association of the Internet Industry, which is today the largest association of the Internet industry in Europe. DE-CIX is the world's leading Internet Exchange operator.
As a co-initiator, Harald A. Summa was involved in the foundation of the European associations EURO-ISPA and Euro-IX, whose particular aim is to improve the European Internet infrastructure. Harald A. Summa was also until 2018 a core member of the Advisory Board for the “Young Digital Economy” of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, which seeks to provide stimulus for the future of Germany’s digital economy and for the development of new digital technologies, and a member of the Advisory Board for the “Digital Economy” in North Rhine-Westphalia.
