The movement started in 2014 when our founder Arif Voraji won a bulk buy of 14 pairs of jeans off eBay and started distributing clothing to the cities rough sleeper community.Food was also added and the outreach program gradually moved onto the Leicester markets. Initially we served around 20 to 30 people and this has now grown to over 130 people every Wednesday all year round,all of which are not homeless but many struggle to make ends meet so the food provisions satisfy an immediate need but can also be consumed over the space of a few days.
In the winter of 2017/18 we decided to start booking nights of respite for rough sleepers in B&B's and requested monetary donations from our Facebook following & within 2 days Arif had £2500 in his personal account which then led to the forming of the charity in March 2018.
Once in a B&B we would use this time to ask questions regarding their circumstances and benefits situation and soon discovered we could easily help assist with advocating housing for many individuals. We then built up relationships with a network of landlords who trusted our verification process and we found suitable accommodation for our first person in January 2018. We pay the deposit into a deposit scheme, assist with furniture, white goods and essentials and ensure the persons Housing Benefit aspect is paid direct to the landlord. We then wrap our arms around the individual with intensive support and moral advice to ensure they can be the best version of themselves and succeed in the tenancy.
To date, we have advocated housing for over 60 individuals (Jan 2020).
We have made a massive dent in the homelessness issue in Leicester where our work is now supported by Leicester City Council, The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and numerous schools, colleges, universities, individuals and businesses.
We launched our Business Club in November 2019 and feel it is a easy way for businesses to fulfil their CSR for the sum of only £460 per annum 🙂
