Helsinki Accelerator Laboratory

Helsinki Accelerator Laboratory is a part of Department of Physics, University of Helsinki. It specializes in experimental and computational materials physics. Established in 1959, the laboratory, which began with Finland's first particle accelerator, has bequeathed generations of scientists to modern Finland who have been active in many areas of Finnish society and continue to inspire in Finnish citizens the tradition of open-mindedness that is characteristic of scientific and academic life. Today the laboratory is home for the international researchers from all around the world. The current research focus is on materials of importance for nanotechnology, micro-, opto- and power electronics, quantum technologies, fusion technologies, and particle detectors. Their properties are studied by applying various ion beam based techniques, positron annihilation spectroscopy as well as by computational means.
