The Hong Kong Film Festival UK aims to shine an international spotlight on Hong Kong cinema in its broadest sense. A new wave of cinema produced within Hong Kong and in diaspora is built upon Hong Kong’s and East and Southeast Asia’s rich cinematic as well as broader socio-cultural heritage. Through this new wave, the Festival strives to promote cultural interactions and spark exchanges between Hong Kong communities and the world.
Every year we organise a main film festival, accompanied with different forms of activities like talks and workshops. We are actively expanding our array of programmes to cover periods outside of the main festival.
Mission and Vision:
1. Showcasing Unique Cinematic Narratives: We curate and present artistically meritorious East and Southeast Asian cinema, especially independent films, allowing audiences to engage with narratives that are original, iconic, and often underrepresented in mainstream cinema.
2. Preserving and Sharing Cultural Heritage: Through cinema, we celebrate Hong Kong's unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, exploring its intricate past, cultural manifestations, and the evolving identity shaped by historical transitions.
3. Spotlight on Emerging Voices: Our festival actively promotes and supports emerging filmmakers, providing them a platform to share their distinctive perspectives and experiences, nurturing a community that fosters their artistic growth.
4. Community Building and Bonding: With the recent surge in Hong Kong immigration to the UK, we aim to create inclusive art experiences and storytelling platforms, bridging cultural gaps and fostering connections between different communities.
