HoustonNVC's Vision: We envision greater Houston as a community valuing authenticity, compassion, and respect. HoustonNVC's Mission: We promote these values by facilitating the practice of a learnable process called Compassionate or Nonviolent Communication (NVC). Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a concrete set of language and communication skills developed by Marshall Rosenberg that help to resolve conflicts peacefully, create harmony in relationships, and build lasting peace. NVC is used by people throughout the world in interpersonal relationships, families, business and organizational structures, and in broader social change efforts. NVC helps us create a quality of connection where everyone's needs are equally valued and met through compassionate giving, rather than out of fear, guilt, shame, or threat of punishment or violence. With its focus on feelings and universal human needs, the practice of NVC emphasizes emotional intelligence over intellectual diagnosis in expressing to and receiving from others. With its reliance on objective observations rather than evaluations, NVC avoids making people defend themselves from value-laden judgments. And finally, by employing clear requests in place of demands, NVC taps into the natural desire we all have for contributing to one another. NVC raises the bar for communication skills by allowing everyone to get their needs met on their own terms, without coercion, fear of retribution, or loss of self-esteem.
