We have come to understand that the major barrier to translation is not the quality of research within the UK but the development of correct commercial mechanisms and the knowledge to allow this work to flourish. Addressing this market failure is incredibly important, as it has the potential to transform the health and wealth of the nation. Creating better medicines rapidly for the benefit of patients, providing highly paid employment for STEM graduates and providing economic return on the substantial investment the UK government places in basic research. We support early stage research and innovation in two ways: 1) Development of novel commercialisation mechanisms, partnerships and the application of commercial insight at the earliest stages of R&D and 2) Development of skills and knowledge of those individuals performing research to ensure the end goal of translation is in mind Working towards new commercialisation mechanisms has led to significant initiatives in the UK landscape, including i) a strategic partnership between the University of Exeter and the Medicines Discovery Catapult to identify innovation at its earliest stages, ii) development of wholly novel multi-center drug discovery programme in ageing between the Universities of Oxford, Dundee, Birmingham and the Medicines Discovery Catapult and iii) hosting of an investor conference around a new funding mechanism for drug discovery by the Deputy Mayor of London. Whilst improving education has i) involved advising on the development of Lab Sciences, T-levels, ii) Advising an Eastern European government on their technical education plan whilst interlinking it with commercialisation policy and iii) working with The Skills Network to conceptualise a working with The Skills Network to conceptualise a learning management system to support entrepreneurship and commercial readiness thinking.
