INDICATE LIFE aims to work towards the goal of a climate neutral European Union (EU) by 2050. It does so by addressing the challenge of reducing Whole Life Carbon (WLC) emissions in the built environment. Since buildings contribute to around 40% of global carbon emissions, improving life cycle assessment (LCA) data is crucial for effective action in the industry and policymaking.
Co-funded by the EU LIFE programme, INDICATE LIFE aims to play a key role in Europe’s transition to a low carbon built environment by addressing WLC emissions and promoting sustainable practices.
Following the success of the INDICATE pilot project, which assisted Spain, Ireland, and the Czech Republic in creating LCA data for national WLC regulations, INDICATE LIFE extends this effort to five more EU countries: Italy, Austria, Croatia, Luxembourg, and Hungary. The project focuses on improving national WLC calculation tools and ensuring they align with key EU directives such as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).
Smith Innovation leads the project, with support from BPIE, KU Leuven, and World Green Building Council (WorldGBC). The project's 22 partners, including industry, policy, and academic experts, are convening to develop tools for calculating WLC, to gather and analyse LCA data for both new buildings and retrofits, and to assess the cost-benefits of LCA to guide policy decisions.
