InnoThyroGen is a Horizon Europe project coordinated by the University of Split School of Medicine. The project focuses on exploring innovative solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders, which affect millions of people worldwide. These conditions include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease, as well as the increasing prevalence of thyroid cancers. It is estimated that nearly 60% of individuals with thyroid disorders remain undiagnosed, complicating timely intervention and treatment.
Despite the availability of various therapeutic options, such as levothyroxine or antithyroid medications, a significant proportion of patients encounter challenges, including improper dosing, adverse drug effects, and the need for frequent adjustments to treatment. These difficulties highlight the necessity of a more personalized approach to care, one that accounts for genetic predispositions and environmental influences.
InnoThyroGen leverages the latest advancements in genomics, including next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies and polygenic risk scores (PRS), to improve diagnostic and preventive strategies. By integrating genetic data with electronic health records and lifestyle information, the project enables more accurate predictions and personalized medical care. Furthermore, pharmacogenomics provides the foundation for tailoring therapies to individuals based on their genetic profiles.
The development of specialized thyroid disease gene panels, combined with artificial intelligence and digital solutions, represents a pivotal step toward introducing personalized medicine into clinical practice. InnoThyroGen has the potential to reduce healthcare costs, enhance treatment efficacy, and improve the quality of life for patients.
