About Intelligent Systems Lab

As the prevalence of complex system grows and control requirements of dynamical systems is ubiquitous, so does the availability of virtual simulations and the vast amount of data gathered. A data treasure that must be unearthed! As the INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS LAB research team that is part of the Institute of Aviation at the University of Applied Sciences FH JOANNEUM, we specialize in advancing simulation of complex dynamical systems to allow efficient control and profound decision-making. We strive to leverage AI based and machine learning methods in all fields of aviation engineering, based on a solid background in flight control as a solid foundation. By driving innovations in these fundamental technologies, we leverage the realization of digitalization and technological change in aviation as a primary objective of current RTI goals. Whether we perform reduced order modelling of CFD data, data driven failure modeling, identification of flight dynamics or machine learning for control-the INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS LAB team is committed on the broader view at underlying methods that ensure systems to behave as intended. As part of FH JOANNEUM, we contribute to numerous projects that leverage safety, reliability and resilience in aviation. We investigate into data driven model creation, sparse sensing and anomaly detection ranging from H2 combustion (KI-PIRINHA), Ice accretion (ALL WEATHER DRONE, IceDrone, IFIRE) and UAV fleet modeling and performance monitoring (DRONE4ALL). Beyond that, we explore mission planning and trajectory optimization for manned aircraft (eSAFE, im.FLUGE, AIRBILITY) as well as for UAV (LEAL, LAUDENT, SENSE&AVOID, BIOKOLLAVOID) These projects demonstrate our ability to the methods needed to tackle challenges in modern aviation: Creating insights from data that empower smart decisions. Through these efforts, the INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS LAB and the FHJOANNEUM remain at the forefront of research, continuously thriving for insights into complex systems!
