Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) is a scientific institute established in 1983 as the successor to the Marine Station, which had been operating in Sopot since 1953. The Institute conducts research on various aspects of oceanology, including physics, chemistry, biology, and marine ecology. The mission of IO PAN is to conduct fundamental research on the marine environment and to deepen knowledge about the phenomena and processes taking place there. Research is carried out on the Baltic Sea and the European Arctic, focusing on four strategic directions: I. The role of the oceans in shaping the climate and the its effects on European seas II. The natural and anthropogenic variability of the Baltic Sea environment III. Contemporary changes in the coastal ecosystems of shelf seas IV. Genetic and physiological mechanisms of marine organisms; foundations of marine biotechnology
