We use the latest pain science that shows education and psychology are key for making a real difference - For improving functional capacity, performance and return to work, and reducing absence, work-related disability and costs. Research shows: • Injury and pain have biopsychosocial causes – many are helped or hindered by work. • The brain controls injury, pain and recovery, and learns to feel pain within 3 months: Pain needs to be unlearnt. • There are no reliable medical or physical predictors of return to work and prolonged work-disability (Verkerk et al, 2012) • There are 5 robust and consistent psychosocial predictors; recovery expectations, coping confidence, catastrophisation, perceived injustice and health beliefs (e.g., Sullivan, 2011). All can be improved with pain education and psychology. Why is this important: • 1/3 of the UK adult population have chronic pain. • 21% of all work-related sickness absence are due to MSK conditions (HSE, 2023). • MSK have many personal and organisational costs. • MSK is particularly high amongst: skilled trade workers; process, plant and machine operators; admin and support staff; and health and social care workers (HSE, 2023).
