About School of Engineering at Lancaster University

The School draws upon over five decades of excellence and innovation in engineering, and today is a thriving centre for research and education. The School is now going through an exciting period of expansion and change as it seeks to become world-leading in research excellence, inclusivity and teaching innovation. Created in 1969, the School’s heritage is that of general engineering and today we continue to bring that interdisciplinary ethos to our teaching and research. Our staff are drawn from across the engineering, science and technology landscape, and include applied mathematicians, chemists, physicists, materials scientists in addition to designers, structural engineers, aerodynamicists, bioengineers and communications engineers. It is because of this breadth of expertise that over 90% of our research outputs in the REF2021 research assessment were submitted as interdisciplinary. Also, it is by exploiting this interdisciplinarity that we have been able to grow the School and increase our impact through the integration of research, knowledge exchange and teaching across the engineering disciplines. We like to think that we're one of the broadest and friendliest communities of engineers, students and support staff in the UK. Our work spans communications, energy, manufacturing, bioengineering, informatics, sustainable use of materials, nuclear physics and chemistry and healthcare. Our strength lies in our diversity; we support each other, and we embrace individuality. We also have strong local and international collaborations, across many areas of our research. What we do, and how we do it, really is quite extraordinary and we look forward to meeting you and explaining our work to you.
