The research group of Steel Structures at LUT University focuses on the design and strength analysis of metallic parts and components. The group's core research activities investigates the mechanical performance of joints and structures made of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels, light metals, and advanced alloys under various load and environmental conditions. High-quality research and teaching – without forgetting societal impact on engineering – emphasize a blend of experimental methods, modeling, and simulation to advance design and analysis capabilities. The primary research areas include:
• Fatigue strength assessment methods
• Static and fatigue strength of welded joints and components
• Usability of high-strength steels and ultra-high-strength steels
• Structural performance and quality of high-strength steels
• Enhancement of fatigue strength of welded joints by welding techniques and post-weld treatments
• Numerical methods and analysis of welded structures, e.g. stress analysis and computational weld mechanics
