The Cal Poly Humboldt McNair Scholars Program, situated within the Indian Natural Resources Sciences & Engineering Program + Diversity in STEM, is a federal TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. It is designed to prepare undergraduate students from underrepresented groups for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.
The goal of the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program is to increase graduate degree awards for students from underrepresented segments of society. McNair participants are either first-generation college students with financial need or members of a group that is traditionally underrepresented in graduate education and have demonstrated strong academic potential.
The cornerstone of the McNair Scholars Program is a stipend is a 10-week summer research internship with a faculty mentor conducting research and preparing a research paper. This opportunity will allow students to present their work at local, regional, and/or national conferences with expenses paid by the McNair program. Engaging in research and presenting at conferences will help each scholar become a highly competitive applicant when applying to graduate school.
Eligibility:
1. A sophomore, junior, or senior (with an additional term/or year) interested in pursuing a PhD
2. Identify as EITHER:
A low-income, first-generation student
OR
An underrepresented group in graduate education (Black/African American, Hispanic/Chicano/Latinx/a/o, American Indian/Native/Indigenous, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander)
4. Have at least a 2.80 or higher GPA
The land where Cal Poly Humboldt is located is part of the ancestral homeland of the Wiyot people who were here since time immemorial before this university was founded.
