Miti Mitaani (which means ‘trees in our neighborhoods’ in Kiswahili) scales tree cover in African cities by creating climate jobs. We engage women and youth as tree stewards, who are paid to plant and ensure the survival of trees.
To date, Miti Mitaani has established 3 community forests in Nairobi. Women and youth can earn up to $375 by planting and caring for trees in their own neighborhoods. As a result, a tree steward increases her or his monthly household income by 50% on average.
Temperatures in cities globally are rising as tree cover declines due to urban development. Trees are the most cost effective and scalable way to mitigate the effects of climate change. We are creating greener, cooler and climate-resilient cities, one tree at a time.
