Our Story of Discovering Handmade Japanese Art
MITSUBACHI.EU began in Tokyo, where our founder, Dick, discovered the rare honey produced by native Japanese honeybees. This honey, unlike anything he had ever tasted, was scarce, refined, and deeply complex—much like the handcrafted works of Japan’s master artisans.As Dick learned more, he began to notice striking parallels between the smaller, native Japanese honeybee and Japan's artisans. The smaller Japanese honeybee produces a limited amount of honey, but what it creates is exceptional—one of a kind. This is because the bees visit nearly 100 different plants, compared to European bees that visit just a few, enriching the flavor. Similarly, Japanese artisans, with the same dedication to quality, create their works with care and tradition, focusing on excellence over volume. In contrast, industrial mass production, like the larger Western honeybee introduced to Japan in the 19th century, emphasizes high-volume output, often sacrificing the soul and uniqueness found in handcrafted Japanese art, whether in ceramics, lacquerware, or the detailed work of gold leaf artisans from Kanazawa.
Our name, MITSUBACHI (蜜蜂), meaning "Honey Bee" in Japanese, reflects our philosophy. Just as the honeybee enriches the world through its careful selection, we enrich lives by bringing thoughtfully curated pieces of Japanese craftsmanship into the hands of those who appreciate the deeper value of handmade art.
