NALA is pioneering offering pay as you go (PAYGO) solar home system (SHS) and smartphone in Lesotho. With NALA PAYGO, consumers choose from a range of smartphones or solar home systems, from basic lighting systems to entertainment systems including solar powered televisions to business solutions including phones charging and refrigeration to productive use including solar water pumps. How it works is the customer purchase the product at NALA sales and service centres or certified agents and then pays slowly via mobile money towards the acquisition of the unit over a defined period of time from 3 to 18 months by making regular payments for the electricity generated by the solar system or for use of an android smartphone. When a consumer makes a payment via mobile money, the customer receives a unique code to enable the system to function for a defined amount of time, depending on the amount of the payment and the specific loan option selected by the customer. If the customer misses any payments, the product will automatically shut off, and penalty fees will be applied. Once all payments have been made, the unit is unlocked, and no further payments are required as the product is fully owned by the customer. This approach does not require GSM and works even in areas where there is no telecommunications network. NALA also offers industry leading service and guarantees on all products, including a 3-year warranty on all solar equipment.
