nanoLAB is a research laboratory with specialized knowledge in the synthesis, surface modification, properties and impacts of colloidal nanomaterials (inorganic and hybrids), envisaging environmental, energy and health applications. A significant contribution of our research has been in the surface chemistry of diverse types of colloidal nanoparticles to produce functional materials. Examples of materials and their nanocomposites include semiconductors, metals, glasses, polyoxometalates, metal oxides and carbon nanostructures. The research and advanced formation carried out in our laboratory are institutionally framed by the missions identified for the Department of Chemistry and the CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials of the University of Aveiro.
The nanoLAB researchers use a series of instrumental techniques through an integrated approach to the scientific problem(s) under analysis, which includes the use of vibrational spectroscopy (Raman and Infrared), potentiometry, electronic spectroscopies, X-ray powder diffraction and various microscopic techniques dedicated to characterization and processing at the nanoscale. In particular, we explore vibrational spectroscopy, and chemical imaging applied to nanoscale materials, envisaging new analytical methods.
Other research interests include the chemistry of pigments, coordination compounds and the synthesis of inorganic-organic hybrid materials, which in many aspects follow the main objectives described above. nanoLAB has actively collaborated with researchers in the field of Nanotoxicology, namely Biologists and Environmental Engineers, seeking to contribute to the safe and responsible use of nanomaterials in different areas, aiming at the well-being and progress of populations.
nanoLAB is often recognized as a creative atelier in the production of scientific knowledge and human resources formation, addressing scientific and pedagogical aspects that use mainly Chemistry, Nanotechnology and Materials Science.
