About The Neurorights Foundation
(Previously Neurorights Initiative - Columbia University) Over the last decade, neuro-engineering has developed rapidly. Neurotechnologies, especially brain-computer interfaces, have the potential to foundationally alter society. We are headed towards a world where it will be possible to decode thought from neural activity or grant mind enhancement by linking the brain directly to digital networks. Such innovations could challenge the very notion of what it means to be human. In light of this coming reality, The NeuroRights Foundation works to develop ethical codes and human rights directives to aid policymakers, technologists, and scientists in the regulation of neurotechnology. The NeuroRights Foundation also raises awareness about the human rights risks associated with new applications of neurotechnologies. NeuroRights Protection: The NeuroRights Foundation's first goal is to protect the rights of citizens from potentially harmful neurotechnologies. To accomplish this, the NRF works to incorporate five NeuroRights or equivalent protections into existing human rights legal documents throughout the world. Technocratic Oath: The NeuroRights Foundation's second goal is to pre-empt the creation of harmful neurotechnologies and AI algorithms by providing ethical frameworks for entrepreneurs, physicians, and researchers developing Neurotechnology and AI. Much as doctors must follow the Hippocratic oath, those who develop and administer neurotechnology should follow a “technocratic oath”.
