Guns are the leading cause of death in children in the United States. That is a fact we cannot turn away from. It is uncomfortable, and it should be.
Children are innocent, curious, impetuous, and loved. They are developing and learning. They will make mistakes. They will get do-overs…until they don’t.
One of the most tragic aspects of a child or teen dying by way of a gun is that their death in most instances was avoidable. The accidental shooting. The teenager who took their own life. The mass shooting. The crime. Too often children get access to a gun they should have never had access to. A moment of haste and immature judgment ends in tragedy with no do-overs. And we are left to wonder how this could have happened.
We know better. It's time to do better!
