Ocean Stars Trust (OST) was established in 2005 following the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004. Our Vision is a Sri Lanka where every child has equal opportunities.
Our Mission is to identify and overcome barriers to equal opportunities for children in Sri Lanka through education and social enrichment, sharing friendship, hope and joy.
We support 26 preschools in Sri Lanka and believe passionately in the importance of Early Years Development. Most of our Preschools are located in remote villages where there were no preschool educational opportunities. We support with running costs, provide uniforms and school bags, ensure all preschools have the necessary resources and have a focus on quality education. A key area for us is Teacher Training, and we organise an annual teacher training event for our preschool teachers.
In 2019, OST developed an assessment tool to track the development of early years skills of our 800+ preschool children. The aims of the Assessment Tool are:
-To make it easier for teachers to track the progress of each preschool child.
-For the teachers to be able to identify children who might require further support.
-To engage parents in their child's development.
-For Ocean Stars to improve the quality of education in the preschools they support.
We also support livelihood projects, such as sewing and IT courses for the local community.
Each year, we take a number of volunteers out to Sri Lanka to see and support the work we do. It is a life-changing experience for the volunteers, but also for the Sri Lankan children who are visited.
