While parents report avoiding conversations with their children about complex topics like consent, gender, drugs and alcohol, and body image, studies prove that communication is central to better physical and mental health outcomes for young people. In a 2021 report from The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare on how well 16–17-year-olds got along with their parents, teens scored their parents lowest on topics regarding communication.
