Founded in Jan 2021, Pectin 360’s ambition is to turn fresh fruit waste into an all Australian made pectin based on recycling fruit waste.
Our ambition is to re-establish pectin manufacturing in Australia (no pectin has been produced domestically for at least 30 years) utilising fresh fruit waste to manufacture an all Australian-made pectin utilising novel technologies that are more efficient, cleaner and greener than traditional methods and provide circular economy benefits across the value chain. This pectin will deliver significant supply chain benefits to existing users who currently suffer from international supply chain interruptions and outages.
Pectin is a setting / gelling agent used in jams and dairy products and a soluble fibre for gut health. The pectin supply chain is unreliable and quality variations mean that Australian pectin buyers are very keen on a local, reliable and quality supply of pectin.
The A&NZ market has been conservatively sized to be 550 tonnes per year based on jams, dairy products and nutraceuticals alone, with a value of around $20m. The confectionary and cosmetics markets are likely increase tis estimate significantly.
Citrus and apple waste for example contain a significant amount of pectin, which through our novel manufacturing processes (at a pilot scale) we can recover a large proportion, using significantly less power and of a higher quality than that produced by traditional large-scale production processes.
Our mission aligns strongly with domestic recycling initiatives and the drive toward a circular economy. e.g. CRC Fight Food Waste program, CRC-P Circularity program and several private industry grants.
