About Polar Engineering Research Group (PERG)
Our Mission PERG is committed to strengthening South Africa’s scientific leadership in Antarctica by generating essential climate data to inform national and global policies. By enhancing knowledge of the Antarctic ice sheet, glaciers, and ice shelves, we support sustainable climate action and contribute to international efforts in mitigating the risks of ocean warming, extreme weather, and rising sea levels due to global climate change. About Us PERG is dedicated to pioneering Antarctic research through advanced engineering and science. As one of the original twelve signatories to the Antarctic Treaty (1949), South Africa has maintained a long-standing research presence in Dronning Maud Land, but long-term glaciological observations require renewed focus to assess the growing impacts of climate change on the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet and global sea levels. PERG’s interdisciplinary team of engineers, glaciologists, geodesists, and geophysicists is working to fill critical gaps in understanding the dynamics of the Antarctic ice. Why Our Research Matters 🌍 The Antarctic ice sheet, glaciers, and ice shelves hold 60% of the world’s freshwater—their stability is crucial in preventing catastrophic sea-level rise and extreme weather events. 🔬 Ice melt and calving loss rates remain largely understudied—our work fills a vital gap in global climate research. 📡 We leverage cutting-edge technology—from radar, GPS and seismics to satellite data—to improve predictive glaciological models for policymakers. ⛏️ Our research is grounded by hands-on fieldwork on the Antarctic continent, ensuring real-world validation of climate models. Our Impact PERG’s research strengthens South Africa’s role in Antarctic science, ensuring the country contributes to critical climate change discussions and policy decisions. By advancing knowledge of the Antarctic ice sheet dynamics, we provide the scientific foundation needed for climate action and risk mitigation on a global scale.
