PRIMARY project

At PRIMARY, we transform underutilized agricultural byproducts into valuable resources that create new business opportunities in rural communities across Europe. Our EU-funded project brings together 12 partnering organizations from Finland, Greece, and Estonia to develop smart, sustainable upcycling solutions that benefit farmers, local economies, and the environment. Across Europe, vast amounts of agricultural biomass go unused each year. Valuable materials like grass clippings, greenhouse trimmings, cotton residue, and olive processing waste are routinely burned, composted, or simply discarded. This widespread practice creates a double challenge: it wastes potential resources while rural communities miss crucial opportunities for economic diversification and growth. Through our innovative upcycling technologies, from biorefinery and fermentation processes to foam forming technology and pyrolysis techniques, we're putting primary producers at the core of Europe's sustainable ecosystem, transforming what was once considered waste into engines for rural prosperity.
