Global migration is one of today’s most pressing challenges. Contrary to popular belief, most of it isn’t simply flight from hardships, but flight to opportunity—nearly 85% of worldwide migration is motivated by the desire for better economic prospects. As the internet continues to illuminate what’s possible, more than three billion additional people are expected to come online. The world simply can’t absorb that movement as it stands. Enter Promise Hub. Drawing on Sugata Mitra’s groundbreaking “hole in the wall” experiment, we embrace his conclusion that “given tools and encouragement, communities will self-organize to solve their own problems.” At our living learning center in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement (Uganda), we apply this principle by teaching entrepreneurship, providing digital resources, and offering targeted mentorship to spark sustainable local economies. In short, we bring opportunity to people—so they don’t have to leave their homes in search of it.
