About RiboCode

We are a team of cross-disciplinary research scientists aiming to transform our understanding of specialised ribosomes. Specialised ribosomes are groups of ribosomes that specifically translate a set of mRNAs and represent a new regulatory mechanism in gene expression. Using cutting-edge scientific techniques and working across multiple institutions, we aim to understand the detailed molecular mechanisms of specialisation and determine common features across eukaryotes. We study ribosome specialisation from an evolutionary, functional (translational outcome) and structural perspective, using different eukaryotic model systems (yeast, Drosophila, Arabidopsis and human cells) that cover >1 billion years of evolution. We are also developing novel tools, including nanopore-based approaches, to characterise specialised ribosomes in single cells. The RiboCode team comprises 20 scientists across three UK universities: Leeds, Nottingham and Sheffield. We are supported by a scientific advisory board from academia and industry: Professors Anne Willis OBE and Alan Warren (both University of Cambridge), Dr Olivia Rissland (University of Colorado) and Dr Mark Bruce (Oxford Nanopore Technologies). Alongside our research activities, we are actively engaged in outreach work and committed to leading the way in IDEA, sustainability, research culture and ECR career development practices.
