About Sanctuary Farms
Sanctuary Farms is a grassroots urban farming and environmental justice organization based on Detroit’s Eastside, committed to transforming vacant land into spaces of healing, nourishment, and community empowerment. Rooted in the belief that everyone deserves access to healthy food, clean air, and dignified relationships with the land, we work at the intersection of food sovereignty, environmental regeneration, and social justice. Our work centers on closing the food loop—composting food scraps and organic waste to enrich the soil that grows our food, returning value to what is often discarded. Through this circular model, we not only reduce waste and sequester carbon but also deepen community understanding of ecological cycles and stewardship. We grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, and native plants while offering experiential learning opportunities that reconnect people to ancestral practices and the wisdom of the land. Sanctuary Farms is more than a farm—it is a living classroom, a sanctuary space, and a community anchor. We host workshops, healing events, and cultural gatherings, inviting people of all ages to engage in practices that foster collective resilience and self-determination. Our partnerships with schools, local organizations, and neighbors enable us to co-create solutions that are place-based, people-powered, and future-facing. As we expand our vision to include a nature sanctuary, compost demonstration site, and learning gardens, our mission remains grounded in honoring the past while reimagining the future of our neighborhoods. At Sanctuary Farms, we cultivate more than crops—we cultivate liberation, belonging, and the regenerative potential of community care. #UrbanFarming #FoodSovereignty #EnvironmentalJustice #Detroit #Compost #CommunityHealing #CircularEconomy #SanctuaryFarms
